Keely's Keets - Who are we and what do we do?
We at Keely's Keets are dedicated to provide top quality pet budgies. (Parakeets) Though we are still small we have many beautiful colors/mutations. We have Pieds, Greywings/Clearwings, Albinos, Opalines, Yellowfaces, and more to come.
Our budgies are unique in that they are hand raised and parent raised. Meaning that we don't remove the chicks from the mother at ten days to hand feed; we let the mothers raise their babies while we feed the babies 1-2 times a day. This tames the babies to make them very easy to train and continue the bird/human bonding process once at their new home. Our adult birds get the satisfaction of raising their clutches from start to finish and the babies get the best of both worlds; hand fed and parent raised. The birds are ready to be sold shortly after being completely weaned. At that age, the birds are mature enough to be on their own, but young enough, to easily be trained and quickly bond to you and your family. Our birds are comfortable with dogs around their cages, music, and loud family activities; so they will be comfortable in most household situations.
We make a point of weaning our baby budgies to a varied diet so you can give them a healthy diet from the beginning. You won't have to spend months and months trying to change your bird's food to a more healthy diet.
We give our birds the very best diet possible. Daily we give our birds fresh food that can be anything from cooked rice to raw carrot. A constant supply of our favorite parakeet seed mix with dried fruits and vegetables is provided 24/7. Dried food and the much loved millet sprays are given occasionally. A favorite of our birds are fresh-from-our-garden, parsley. On top of the seed mix we add some avian vitamin and mineral powder; just to make sure they are getting all that they need to thrive. Also in every cage we keep a mineral block and a cuttlebone available at all times.
We believe that record keeping is of great importance for our breeding, your information, and the bird's health. All our babies, unless otherwise stated, are close leg banded at 5-7 days old with registered/traceable leg bands.
At this time, we keep our birds in our home, in a cage-created 'bird room'. We keep the cages, nest boxes, and our home as clean as possible. Our nest boxes are washed, bleached, and sun dried between clutches. We also repeat this process 3-4 times during the chicks' development. Cages are completely scrubbed down in between breeding couples, when soiled, and wiped down as necessary. We keep layers of paper on top of the grates in all our cages; of which we peel off the top layer or two every other day. We do this so the birds have something to stand on other than a hard, metal grate. The paper is also something safe for the birds to play with and chew up; plus when good food falls to the ground, the birds can practice the natural foraging behavior; which they love, find very enjoyable, and it gives added exercise. With the paper system, we can observe the droppings of our birds; which is one of the first and best indicators of our birds' health.
Food and water dishes are washed and refilled every night. The only open water we have is for baths, which is provided at all times so the birds can bathe freely, naturally keeping themselves clean. For drinking water we use closed water bottles which we completely clean and refill every couple of days or when necessary. We add about 1 tsp. of apple cider vinegar to every 16 ounces of bottled drinking water. Not only does the apple cider vinegar keep the water cleaner longer, but it helps with the budgies' digestive tract.
Budgies are very active and intelligent creatures so we provide many toys and fun things for play. Our birds really love simple wood and wire swings. We make most of our own toys with bird safe material, some of which are for sale.
We breed these high quality budgies for family pets. Our birds are bred to be pets and Not breeders. Every bird bred here is special and deserves only the best.
